Maties bounce back against SK

The FNB Maties bounced back from their defeat to Hamilton’s at the weekend with a crushing 47-17 win over SK Walmers in Western Province Super League action in Stellenbosch on Tuesday.

The three-times Varsity Cup champions scored seven tries, wrapping up the bonus point before the half-time break – that after suffering their first defeat of the year (a 34-44 reversal) to the National Club champions just three days earlier.

Danie Poolman (pictured) – who had a strong Varsity Cup campaign at centre, or on the wing – was, once again, amongst the Maties’ try-scorers. Flyhalf André Kemp converted all but one of the Stellenbosch tries.

The other Maties try-scorers on Freedom Day were Hayden Groepes, Rohan Steyl, Josh Strauss, Matthew Dobson, Arno White and Jonathan Francke.

Maties’ scorers:
Tries:
Groepes, Poolman, Steyl, Strauss, Dobson, White, Francke
Cons: Kemp

* Meanwhile, there was no respite for Stellenbosch’s second team, Victorians, whose disappointing 2010 Super League season continued when they went down 38-59 to a rampant False Bay team – also on Tuesday.
