Maties lose another one
Reigning Varsity Cup champs, FNB Maties, suffered a second Super League defeat of the season when they went down 18-19 to a fired-up False Bay team in Constantia on Saturday.
Flyhalf Demitrie Catrakalis was the undoubted hero for False Bay, his penalty goal shortly before full-time handing them a famous victory – having, earlier this season, also claimed the scalp of Hamilton’s. (Hamilton’s of course, beat Stellenbosch last week.)
The Maties outscored False Bay by two tries to one – their tries being scored by Danie Poolman and Paul Bosch – but the home side never gave up and the boot of Catrakalis, along with a try by winger Danie Roux, helped inflict yet another defeat on the Varsity Cup champions.
Stellenbosch are still on top of the Western Province Super League log – but Varsity Cup rivals, FNB UCT, are breathing down their necks in a bid for National Club Championships qualification.
The Maties will travel to Groote Schuur to take on the Ikeys next weekend in an Intervarsity clash that will have more, than normal, at stake… Before then, however, Stellenbosch will host Helderberg in WP Super League action on Wednesday night.
