Maties win 'Maroon Derby'
FNB Maties got their 2010 Western Province Super League campaign off to a good start with a 36-28 win over fellow Stellenbosch side, Victorians, at the Danie Craven Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Maties, who last Monday won their third successive Varsity Cup title, were leading 36-16 before Vics rallied to score two late tries.
Loose forward Jonathan Adendorf – who has just returned from Morocco with the victorious SA Students Sevens team – scored two tries for the Maties, along with fellow Varsity Cup winners, winger Wilhelm Loock and hooker Matthew Dobson.
Left-wing Rohan Steyl scored the other Maties try, whilst fit-again No.10 Hayden Groepes kicked four conversions and one penalty goal.
The winner of Round One of the Super League will represent Western Province in the National Club Championships later this year and the Men in Maroon will be buoyed by defending champions, Hamilton’s, first-round loss to False Bay last week.
