Stellenbosch suffer first defeat
Varsity Cup champions, the FNB Maties, were beaten for the first time in a competitive rugby fixture this year, when they suffered a 34-44 defeat to reigning Western Province Super League champions, Hamilton’s.
Hamilton’s, who beat Stellenbosch to the Super League title last year, scored five tries to four and were full value for their win; a result which opens the table up a little bit ahead of qualification for the National Club Championships later this season.
The home side used their pace out wide to good effect, with wingers Alshaun Bock and Terry Jacobs scoring three tries between them. Fullback Elrich van Vuuren scored a try and contributed 16 points with his boot – a crucial contribution in the final analysis.
For the Maties, flyhalf André Kemp was once again in the points – through one try, four conversions and one penalty goal – but the students did manage a four-try bonus point and still occupy first place on the WP Super League log.
* Meanwhile, with the Maties suffering their first loss of 2010, Victorians picked up their first league win of the year – beating NNK 27-10, also on Saturday.
Varsity Cup heroes, flanker Sam Mabombo and winger Thythan Adams, turned out for Vics and both impressed – the latter scoring one of their four tries.
