Stellenbosch too strong for Villager's
FNB Maties made it two from two in the 2010 Western Province Super League, with a crushing 31-8 win over Villager’s at Coetzenburg’s Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday.
The home side scored five tries to one, but it was hardly vintage stuff from the Varsity Cup champions who led 19-3 at half-time.
“Losing so many players to the WP Vodacom team meant we were fielding nine new faces,” Maties coach Chean Roux told the Cape Argus afterwards. “I thought we played too laterally, but I’ll take the five points.”
Scrumhalf Johan Herbst (pictured) scored an early try for the hosts, to put them 7-0 up after flyhalf André Kemp’s conversion, and Stellenbosch picked up the four-try bonus point in the second half when the selfsame Herbst crossed to complete his brace.
* Meanwhile, SK Walmers smashed Maties’ second team, Victorians, 44-15 on Saturday – proving that there will be no easy fixtures in the 2010 Western Province Super League.
Of course, this comes after defending champions Hamilton’s – who are also the National Club champions – lost their opening Super League clash of the season against newly-promoted False Bay (a little over a week ago).
Maties’ scorers:
Tries: Johan Herbst 2, Arno White, Rohan Steyl, Reniel Hugo
Cons: André Kemp 3
