Disappointing defeat for Ikeys
FNB UCT ended the first half of the 2010 WP Super League on a disappointing note, when they lost 17-27 to a fired-up and physical Durb-Bell team on Saturday afternoon.
It was a bitterly disappointing defeat for the Ikeys who made such a strong start to the league after their disappointing Varsity Cup Final defeat to the Maties in late March.
Durb-Bell led 22-3 at half-time – a scoreline which ultimately settled the result, despite UCT’s second-half comeback – as they capitalised on some silly errors from the visitors who conceded two breakaway tries.
With 15 minutes remaining in the match, the Ikeys managed to narrow the scoreline to 17-22, but another error from the students led to a final Durb-Bell try… and another loss for UCT.
It was an emotional match for the Ikeys who said goodbye to veteran lock and skipper Bodo Sieber – who will be retiring from competitive rugby – and inside back Matt Rosslee who is going to Griquas on trial.
Of course, it was also head coach John Dobson’s last time in charge of the Men in Blue & White, but he will still be involved with the team’s planning for the 2011 Varsity Cup.
Former UCT captain and SA Sevens star Kevin Foote will take over as head coach from Dobson in the second half of the season.
