Four-try Pukke win in Orkney

Varsity Cup finalists, FNB Pukke, took another step closer towards qualifying for the 2009 National Club Championships after beating Vaal Reefs 22-8 in Orkney on Saturday afternoon.

This Grand Challenge fixture was played in poor weather conditions – but the visitors still managed to pick up a four-try bonus point, with three of their tries coming in the first half.

Right-wing Willem Barnard, inside centre John Roodt and flyhalf Cecil Dumont scored those first-half tries, with Dumont converting just one of the day’s scores.

The second period was a scrappy affair, with captain-on-the-day Nelis Nel scoring their only five-pointer of the second half.

Of course, Pukke are the reigning National Club champions and they will be hoping to defend their title – at Tukkies – in September.

Tries:
Willem Barnard, John Roodt, Cecil Dumont, Nelis Nel
