Ikeys edge out brave False Bay
The FNB Ikey Tigers are the only unbeaten team in the WP Super League, after defeating False Bay 16-15 in a hard-fought encounter at Groote Schuur on Saturday afternoon.
The students – the losing Varsity Cup finalists – led 6-0 at half-time and were made to work by the newly-promoted visitors who, recently, claimed the scalp of club champions Hamilton’s.
Outside centre Mark Esterhuizen scored UCT’s only try, with stalwart flyhalf Matt Rosslee converting his side’s sole five-pointer and also chipping over three penalties.
Rosslee’s third, and final, penalty put the Ikeys in the lead with just two minutes remaining on the clock, but False Bay were awarded a penalty goal in injury-time which Demitrie Catrakalis just pushed wide.
UCT, who are now in third place on the Super League log, will play host to Hamilton’s next weekend, whilst False Bay will play against Victorians (Stellenbosch’s second team); the second of their three successive student fixtures.
