Ikeys too strong for Victorians

The Ikey Tigers recorded their first win of the 2010 WP Super League – beating Stellenbosch’s second team, Victorians, by 50-20 at the Green Mile on Saturday.

The home side ran into a 7-0 lead early on – impressing from the start and showing their intentions to play an expansive game. They led 21-12 at half-time – scoring three tries – and they scored another four five-pointers in the second half.

FNB UCT have now played two Super League matches this season – drawing 40-40 with Helderberg last weekend and beating a young Vics side that is yet to taste victory this season in three outings.

The Ikeys welcomed back Varsity Cup skipper Nick Fenton-Wells (pictured, right) for this game, having sat out last Saturday with a knee injury, with flyhalf Matt Rosslee serving as his deputy.

Fenton-Wells celebrated his return with two tries, whilst prolific winger Marcello Sampson also weighed in with a brace. UCT’s other try-scorers were powerhouse inside centre Sean van Tonder, replacement winger Zubayr Abrahams and outside centre Mark Estherhuizen.

Rosslee, meanwhile, slotted six conversions and one penalty for a 15-point haul on the day.
