Lategen seals Ikeys first win

In a match filled with errors and poor decision-making, UCT managed to score three tries to two in a scrappy win over CUT.

UCT-Ikeys took a 12-0 lead at the break but an impressive double by Darren Adonis levelled matters with five minutes on the clock.

The first 15 minutes looked really poor. Most would blame the windy conditions but even the home side had trouble delivering a solid performance. Finally, the duck was broken thanks to hooker Cuan Hablutzel. From a line-out, UCT secured the ball and popped it to the hooker, who snuck over the line for the try. 5-0

CUT struggled to get a handle on the wind, resulting in them spending most of the first half in their own half.

UCT's ill-discipline made an appearance late in the first half as Xaba Kuyenzeka was given a yellow card and captain Jason Klaasen was shown the first red card of the tournament for a dangerous tackle.

With five minutes left on the clock, CUT were happy to run down the time, but they failed to hold onto to ball which handed UCT a scoring opportunity.

Wing Joel Smith dotted down in the corner for the try. However, the flick on by Tristan Moutan appeared to be forward but after the TMO's review, the try stood.

The home side took the lead of 12-0 to the lockers.

The second half emulated the first half. The lack of composure by both sides produced a match filled with scrappy passes and troublesome scrums.

The referee really had his worked cut out for him. Showing a second yellow card to UCT, this time the try scorer Joel Smith.

Finally CUT broke their duck as Darren Adonis received a marvellous pass. The fullback put on the pace, dummied his opposite number and scored for his side, 5-12  just before the second strategic break.

With the wind in their sails, CUT were starting to gain momentum as the halfback pairing won territory for their side with great kicks. The visitors found themselves playing the quarter in much of UCT's half and the pressure was rewarded as Adonis marched on to score his brace.

The speedy fullback emulated his first try, twisting and turning out of the tackle. Flyhalf Jacobs stepped up to level matters at 12-12 with five minutes left to play.

CUT looked the more likely to seal the victory. In the final minutes, the visitors conceded a penalty and UCT opted for a quick tap and go. A great break by Rayno Mapoe had the wing make up metres before he delivered a pop pass to Rico Lategan to complete the seven-point try for UCT.

The final score 21-12 to the home side.
