Madibaz' year of revival
The Madibaz finished the 2015 campaign in seventh position after recording a solitary victory and bagging seven points from their seven matches but head coach David Maidza is optimistic about the upcoming campaign.
"What we have put out is a squad that I hope will be competitive and regardless of what the make-up of the playing team will be, we aim to build on what was set over previous years. Last year was not the best of seasons for us but that was a lesson learnt and hopefully, going forward now, we can become a good competitive side and that is, what I feel, we have this year.
"After losing a number of experienced players, it was a matter of bringing in individuals who have performed remarkably well in the junior provincial setup but who are students as well. They now have another opportunity to showcase their talents in the best competition for their generation.
"The focus of the squad is entirely on the long term, as opposed to looking for instant success," Maidza told rugby365.com.
While Maidza will be looking to get the institution to reach new heights, he is well aware that it will take a very special effort to accomplish it in one season. He admits that this season will be one of creating a cohesive understanding between the coaches and players.
"It's a new season and everything is fresh. We have a really energetic squad who are eager to get going and test their skill set against all the competitive sides.
"From a technical aspect, I have student athletes who are diligent enough to adjust to requirements. It's not a matter of me being one-track minded or sticking to a certain game plan. We need to make sure we are ready for the challenges and are able to adapt to the challenges that arise during the matches.
"The success of everything will hinge on a cohesive effort from the coaching staff and players alike," he added.
