Plucky UCT hold champs - again

The Ikey Tigers, victors over Hamilton’s in the first round of WP Super League action, got the second half of their 2010 league campaign off to a good enough start – forcing a 19-19 draw with the reigning National Club champions on Saturday afternoon.

UCT, under the guidance of new head coach Kevin Foote – with John Dobson now helping out with the Western Province Under-21 team, led 3-0 at half-time and very nearly came away with the win.

Powerful loose forward Jody Burch scored his team’s only try, with young winger Paul Cohen (pictured) converting Burch’s score and chipping over four penalties.

At one stage – with just ten minutes left on the clock – the home side were leading 19-7, but the club champs scored a late try through winger Alshaun Bock – with Jan van Zyl converting – to level the scores at the Green Mile.

Whilst a draw against a strong line-up like Hamilton’s could be seen as satisfactory for some, there were plenty disappointed UCT players afterwards – especially after their 21-12 away win over Hammies in the first round (in May).

The scorers:

For FNB UCT:
Try:
Jody Burch
Con: Paul Cohen
Pens: Cohen 4

For Hamiltons:
Tries:
Pierre Cronje, JG Giliomee, Alshaun Bock
Cons: Elric van Vuuren, Jan van Zyl
