Pukke blast mediocre Madibaz

The Potchefstroom side ran in seven tries, including a brace by Sylvian Mahuza, to claim the emphatic bonus-point victory. The defeat leaves the Madibaz winless after four matches.

NWU-Pukke came firing out of the gates as centre Sylvian Mahuza grabbed a nine point try in the opening minutes. The try went unconverted but it meant little as, after nine minutes of play, Pukke added a seven point try to their score.

Rhyno Smith broke through the Madibaz defence and offloaded to Jaco Jordaan, who grabbed a seven point try. Rhyno Smith made no mistake with the extra points as the Potchefstroom students stretched their lead to 18-0.

The rain began to fall in Johannesburg, making handling a bit tougher but the one-way traffic continued as the Madibaz found themselves further behind when they conceded a penalty try after the first strategic break.

Smith slotted his second conversion of the match to hand Pukke a commanding 25-0 lead after 23 minutes.

It took the Madibaz a further nine minutes to get themselves on the scoreboard when Henry Brown benefitted from a well executed rolling maul. Simon Bolze added the extras to take the score to 25-7 in favour of Pukke.

Pukke kept the pressure on their opponents and found reward five minutes after the restart through Bernhard Janse van Rensburg. A quickly taken penalty handing the flyhalf a nine point try. Smith added the extras to stretch the lead to 36-7.

The Madibaz bagged a nine point try of their own when Warren Swarts got himself over the line to reduce the deficit to 20 points. Bolze's second conversion saw the Port Elizabeth side trail 18-36.

Sylvian Mahuza grabbed his brace shortly afterwards and another try by Louis van der Westhuizen – both unconverted – ensured Pukke claimed the convincing win.
