Pukke ready for Intervarsity hurdle
NWU-Pukke have been a nightmare for most opposition in the 2010 Pirates Grand Challenge. They have, also, recently overcome two more big hurdles in their quest for yet another trophy, but they now face the ‘Big One’ this weekend – their Intervarsity battle against Shimlas.
Puk have had a good season thus far; beating fellow Varsity Cup side, UJ, 29-20, beating Raiders 53-37 and, then, smashing Union by 92-5.
It was quite an awkward situation on Saturday as they played Union.
One of Pukke’s coaches, Attie Strauss, told his team to enjoy themselves; however, their opponents seemed a little bit too psyched up for the game – an occasion that they were no doubt looking forward to.
Some of their on-field remarks went along the lines of “you guys think you’re clever and strong… but you need the points”. However, that hostility aside, Pukke won 92-5. Remarkably, every Puk player scored a try; with some scoring twice and some adding kicks, too.
Pukke are far ahead on the points table and most probably won’t be toppled by anybody in the 2010 Pirates Grand Challenge, with the National Club Championships in Stellenbosch next on their ‘to-do list’.
Of course, before then, there is the smaller matter of this weekend’s Intervarsity battle in Bloemfontein – against fellow Varsity Cup side, FNB Shimlas.
This is always a tough, tough fixture and there are quite a lot of big names in the Shimla camp – many of whom are well-known Cheetahs players, and all of which will simply add to the occasion.
We wish the Pukke good luck in their winning quest. ‘Go Pukke Go’, with a big thumbs up!!
