Stevens becomes an Elephant
FNB Shimlas captain Wayne Stevens has been signed by the Mighty Elephants for the 2010 Currie Cup.
Stevens, the latest in a long line of Varsity Cup players to move up into the Currie Cup, will compete in the First Division of the tournament for the Elephants against the likes of Boland, Border, the Griffons, the Pumas, SWD and the Valke.
The Shimlas skipper led his side brilliantly during the 2010 Varsity Cup – helping them into their first-ever semifinal where they went down 21-27 to the Ikey Tigers in Cape Town – and his provincial chance is just reward for his efforts.
Of course, the 22-year-old former Grey College has played Vodacom Cup rugby for the Cheetahs before – but this will be his first taste of Currie Cup rugby, having played for Free State at Under-16, Under-18, Under-19 and Under-21 level in the past.
Meanwhile, UCT flyhalf Matt Rosslee – the leading points-scorer in the history of the FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International – has been handed a three-week trial at Griquas.
Griquas, who play in the Premier Division of the Currie Cup, are something of a Varsity Cup hot-bed with a host of former players based in Kimberley at present.
Former Maties skipper Wesley Wilkins – an impressive flanker – is one such player now plying his trade for Griquas in SA’s domestic showpiece.
