Watt: 'Everything to play for'

They might be seventh and last, respectively, on the 2010 Varsity Cup log – but there is still ‘everything to play for’ when the FNB TUT Vikings host FNB NMMU next Monday in the Wooden Spoon ‘Final’.

Vikings assistant coach Jimmy Watt told varsitycup.co.za: “We will give everything to not be involved in promotion/relegation matches again.

“We went through that last year and I can tell you it was nerve-racking. We would much rather like to end the season with a win (their first since March 2008) to be safe for next year’s competition.”

Watt says the last thing he, or his players, will do is to read too much into the Madibas’ record defeat against FNB UJ last (Monday) night in Johannesburg. (NMMU went down 97-14 to the Men from Johannesburg.)

“Sure, losing by such a huge margin has to be very disheartening, but even so they can still finish with a bang by beating us. They will come to Pretoria with that in mind. It will be no walkover, of that I am sure.”

Watt said his team’s performance against FNB Pukke last night in Potchefstroom was very disappointing – with the Vikings going down 17-51 to last year’s losing finalists.

“We did not play well at all. At half-time we were only trailing 10-17, but we were flat-footed for most of the match. We made them look much better than what they really are,” said Watt.

Having played all the potential 2010 semifinals candidates already, Watt believes that the FNB Maties are by far the best and most organised team in the 2010 FNB Varsity Cup presented by Steinhoff International.

He concluded: “They are the overwhelming favourites to be crowned champions for the third year running.

“To my mind, the Ikey Tigers are the only team that could possibly beat them, but even though they gave everything last night they still fell short.”
