Former Bok fullback to coach Uganda

NEWS: Former Springbok fullback Zane Kirchner has been appointed as backs coach of the Uganda Cranes.

Kirchner will work closely with the existing setup, which is led by head coach Fred Mudoola and assistants Leonard Lubambula, Timothy Mudoola, and Marvin Odongo.

His appointment comes on the recommendation of national team consultant Nollis Marais, who was engaged earlier in the year to support the Rugby Cranes’ technical and tactical development.

Kirchner’s primary focus will be working with the backs unit as the team intensifies preparations for the Africa Cup, which doubles as a qualifier for the 2027 World Cup. Uganda will open its campaign against Kenya.

Speaking about the appointment, Crane’s Team Manager Andy Ikopit said, “Bringing in someone with Zane’s experience adds tremendous value to our setup. He has competed at the highest level and brings insight that can help our players grow. His presence boosts our technical capacity as we build towards a critical year for Ugandan rugby.”

Kirchner also shared his excitement about the role: “I’m grateful for the opportunity to work with the Uganda Rugby Cranes. I’ve been following the growth of rugby in Uganda, and I’m excited to contribute to that journey.

“The talent is real, and I’m looking forward to working with the players and coaching team to help unlock the next level.”

Kirchner played fullback for the Bulls in Super Rugby and the Blue Bulls in the Currie Cup. He earned 64 Currie Cup appearances with 64 points and featured in 81 Super Rugby matches, scoring 105 points.

He was part of the Bulls side that won the Currie Cup in 2009 and the Super Rugby titles in 2009 and 2010.
