De Villiers: Springboks on track
Springbok captain Jean de Villiers is convinced national coach Heyneke Meyer and his brains trust have thoroughly prepared for the World Cup and will be ready to claim the William Webb Ellis trophy.
With Super Rugby nearing a close attention has begun to turn toward the national teams and their respective build-ups heading into the World Cup in September.
De Villiers, who was spending time at the local Springbok camps in Cape Town and Johannesburg and has also been participating in certain light drills with the Stormers recently, commended Meyer and his team for all the long-hours and planning they have done in preparation for the World Cup.
"Heyneke [Meyer] and his team have been focused on this World Cup year ever since the final whistle blew against Wales last year,” De Villiers told MyPlayers.co.za.
"They’re leaving no stone unturned as we go through every step.
"Obviously, Super Rugby has been priority for the guys during the opening months, but when it’s time for the players to join the Bok camp, we will be determined to do well during the Rugby Championship, going into the World Cup.
"Every guy wants to play his part, and we will be very well prepared for the challenge."
De Villiers is in a race against time to be fir for national duty after he suffered a serious knee injury in the final 2014 Test match against Wales in Cardiff.
Since then, the 34-year-Old has been solely focused on his rehabilitation, giving himself the best chance of recovering in time for the World Cup.
Despite achieving positive results during his rehabilitation, De Villiers stressed that he’s taking things as they come.
"Once you start seeing the plans fall in place, one gets very excited. Seeing the jersey and wearing it for the first time [at the launch in Cape Town], makes everything more of a reality," De Villiers explained.
"Right now, I’m still focusing on my rehab and making sure I’m strong and fit enough to get back on to the field. That's the prize that is really driving me to push all the way. I’m taking things week-by-week, day-by-day."
