He is the only new appointment amongst the 19 referees whom SANZAAR has appointed for the tournament.

Seconds is a former South African Sevens player, a wing for the Stormers, Western Province and Griquas, one of the recent trend to attract prominent ex-players to refereeing. Others in the same group are Glen Jackson and Jamie Nutbrown of New Zealand and Nic Berry of Australia.

The referees have been chosen from all five countries who have teams playing Super Rugby.

Lyndon Bray, the former Test referee who is now SANZAAR's game manager with refereeing a major part of his brief, said: “The team is a nice blend of Test and Super Rugby experience and emerging talent and is very settled as we head into another season. The experience in the team comes from Jaco Peyper and Glen Jackson, who have refereed over 50 Super Rugby matches each, while we also have a group around the 30 mark including Angus Gardner, Nick Briant and Mike Fraser.

"Glen Jackson, Angus Gardner, Jaco Peyper and Ben O'Keeffe are also refereeing matches in this year's Six Nations in Europe that kicked-off on Saturday."

The referees along with their managers attended a week's course in Sydney recently.
