Scotland have played in all seven World Cups

Scotland has hosted the World Cup once which was jointly hosted by the five nation’s teams.

In 1999 and 2007, there were matches played in Scotland.

Scotland best finish at a World Cup was fourth.

Scotland had seven different captains and six different coaches at World Cups.

Jim Telfer and Bryan Williams are the only coaches to take a team to three consecutive World Cups.

Scotland has played New Zealead five times at World Cups – with the All Blacks beating them on all five occasions. 

They have also appeared in the quarterfinals five times.

1987

Scotland participated in their first World Cup.

There was no qualification process due to Scotland being an International Rugby Football Board member.

Scotland and France were the first teams to play out a draw at a World Cup. They played out to a 20 all draw.

Scotland made the quarterfinals of the World Cup, after their 30-3 loss to New Zealead.

Derrick Grant coached the side-with Colin Deans being captain.

Their biggest winning margin was 39 points when they defeated Zimbabwe 60-21in a pool game.

The Wallabies collected 138 points- with only 99 conceded in the competition.

1991

Scotland hosted the World Cup for the first time which was jointly hosted by the five nations teams.

They received automatic qualification, due to them being in the quarterfinals of the previous World Cup.

Jim Telfer coached the side- with David Sole being captain.

Scotland ended fourth, after their 13-6 loss to New Zealead in the third-place play-off.

Scotland scored 19 tries in the tournament.

Scotland biggest winning margin was 39 points when they toppled Zimbabwe 51-12, in a pool game.

The Scots collected 162 points- with only 64 conceded in the competition.

1995

Scotland appeared in their third World Cup.

They received automatic qualification, due to them ending fourth in the previous World Cup.

Jim Telfer coached the side- with Gavin Hastings being captain.

Scotland had lost to the All Blacks in the quarterfinals, after a 48-30 loss in Pretoria.

Gavin Hastings five tries was the most by a Scottish in the tournament.

Scotland biggest win was 89-0 against Ivory Coast in Rustenburg.

The Scots collected 179 points- with only 75 conceded in the competition.

1999

Scotland appeared in their fourth World Cup.

They received automatic qualification, due to them being in the quarterfinals of the previous World Cup.

Jim Telfer coached the side- with Gary Armstrong being captain.

Scotland was knocked-out again in the quarterfinals.

There were eight games played in Scotland’s, which included six pool games, one quarterfinal play-off and one quarterfinal.

Scotland biggest win was 48-0 against Spain in Edinburgh.

The Scots collected 173 points- with only 108 conceded in the competition.

2003

Scotland participated in their fifth World Cup.

They received automatic qualification, due to them being in the quarterfinals of the previous World Cup.

Ian McGeechan coached the side- with Bryan Redpath  being captain.

Scotland was knocked-out in the quarterfinals by Australia, after a 33-16 loss.

Scotland managed to score 12 tries.

Andy Miller's, 52m drop-goal was the longest one at a World Cup.

Scotland conceded (130) more points than they collected (118).

Their biggest winning margin was 24 points, when they won the United States 39-15, in a pool game.

2007

Scotland participated in their sixth World Cup.

They received automatic qualification, due to them being in the quarterfinals of the previous World Cup.

Frank Hadden coached the side- with Jason White being captain.

Scotland was knocked-out in the quarterfinals by Argentina, after a 19-13 loss.

Two pool games were played in Scotland.

The Scots had managed 15 tries in the tournament- with Rory Lamont getting four of them.

Scotland biggest winning margin was 46 points when they toppled Portugal 56-10, in a pool game.

The Scots collected 129 points- with only 85 conceded in the competition.

2011

Scotland appeared in their seventh World Cup.

They received automatic qualification, due to them being in the quarterfinals of the previous World Cup.

Andy Robinson coached the side- with Alastair Kellock being captain.

The Scots collected 73 points- with only 59 conceded in the competition.

It was the first time that Scotland never made it out of the pool stages. They ended third in their pool.

Scotland biggest winning margin was 10 points when they defeated Romania 34-24, in a pool game.
