Elrigh Louw's Bok comeback inspiration after horror injury
There were moments when Elrigh Louw’s rugby future hung in the balance.
The powerful loose forward suffered one of the most horrific injuries of the 2025 season while playing for the Bulls in their United Rugby Championship triumph over the Lions at the end of January 2025.
Tearing ligaments in his left knee and breaking his leg, the severity of the injury raised genuine fears that his career could be over.
Instead, it became the fuel behind his comeback.

The 26-year-old Louw, who has earned 14 Test caps since making his Springbok debut in 2022, admits the thought of pulling on the green and gold again was the motivation that carried him through months of gruelling rehabilitation.
“Just the motivation to be back in the Springbok squad was more than enough for me to continue working hard and play rugby to the best of my ability,” Louw said.
“To forget about the injury, also mentally, was a big part for me.”
Backed by his family, medical staff and rehabilitation team, Louw returned to action ahead of schedule late last year, defying expectations after an injury many feared would end his career.
Now he has been rewarded with a place in the Springbok starting XV for Saturday’s Test against Argentina at Estadio José Amalfitani, having made his only other appearance this season off the bench against Scotland in the Nations Championship.

Louw revealed that simply being recalled to the Springbok squad reaffirmed all the sacrifices made during his recovery.
“You get your opportunity, and you just do the best of your ability to use it,” he said.
Having experienced the Springboks’ narrow defeat to Los Pumas in Argentina in 2024, Louw knows exactly what awaits this weekend and expects another bruising battle up front.
With new laws placing even greater emphasis on the maul, he said the Springboks have placed considerable focus on that area in preparation for Argentina’s traditionally physical forward pack.
“We’re starting to see a lot more mauls across the game, so it’s definitely an area we continue to work hard on. It’s something we’ve always focused on, and we’ll need to be ready for that challenge.”
