Los Pumas stalwart turns down Euro offers

CONTRACT NEWS: Argentina continues to sign long-term contracts, keeping their stalwarts locked in well past the World Cup.

Agustín Creevy is the latest to sign on.

The veteran hooker has renewed his contract with the Argentine Rugby Union until December 2021.

He joins the likes of Matías Orlando and Matías Alemanno, who signed on last month – despite the interest from European teams.

“I had offers to go abroad and I am very grateful to the clubs that were interested in me,” Creevy said.

“However, for various reasons, at this point in my career, I think the best thing for me is to stay in Argentina.”

He said the appeal to continue to play for Jaguares also weighed heavily in his decision.

“It’s my motivation, my passion and one of the things that have given me the most satisfaction and keeps giving me.

“In short, it’s where I want to be.”

Creevy, 33, spent his early years abroad – with Biarritz, Clermont, Montpellier and Worcester Warriors.

The 85-times capped hooker returned to Argentina in 2016, to join the Jaguares in Super Rugby.

“I had my experience abroad, in different clubs, and I enjoyed it a lot.

“However, I always wanted to return [to Argentina].

“I was part of this project that started in 2009 with Pampas XV and I want to continue building from within Argentina.

Creevy made his debut for Los Pumas in 2005, in a match against Japan, and playing as a loose forward.

He was captain of the national team in 49 tests and competed in the 2011 and 2015 World Cups.

He has been with the Jaguares since inception captained the team for two seasons – played 43 games and scored 12 tries.
