Player ratings: Purple haze

England wore odd-coloured purple-like jerseys and they played as if they were in that haze Jimmy Hendrix always sang about.

Australia, who were so comprehensively beaten by France last week, were full value for their 20-14 win over an England team short of creative ideas and skill.

Despite having held the lead at half-time, England were held scoreless in the second half as the Wallabies eased clear through the boot of fullback Berrick Barnes.

15 Alex Goode:

Made really good ground when countering from the back, although he could have done with a bit more support during those forays.

14 Chris Ashton:

His options, when he had the ball in hand, were poor and resulted in a number of turnovers. He also missed too many tackles.

13 Manusamoa Tuilagi:

Did well to stretch and control the ball with one hand for England's first try. However, his hands were poor and he put the ball down cold when England were chasing the game late in the match. He may be strong, but his skills are very poor.

12 Brad Barritt:

Conceded a penalty near Australian 22 when England were pushing hard for a try. However, his work on defence was outstanding and he was well into double figures on his tackle count, without slipping any.

11 Charlie Sharples:

Not too many chances with ball in hand. He had one dangerous run in the first half, but also slipped a tackle.

10 Toby Flood:

He marshalled the troops very well in the first half and also cut the line on occasion. His goal-kicking was not bad either.

9 Danny Care:

His service could have been a lot crisper. He still takes a step before passing and his kicking out of hand was shocking – which played a huge part in Australia's try. His cover work on defence was outstanding and it was a good option to tap-'n-go for England's try.

8 Thomas Waldrom:

Produced his usual barrage of ball-in-hand forays and had the highest tackle count of all the English players, but lost control of the ball when reaching out to score at a crucial stage in the second half. Also conceded a couple of penalties.

7 Chris Robshaw (captain):

He worked hard off the ball and carried the ball up strongly, making plenty of metres. His work at the breakdown was also invaluable. One of the few England players that did not damage his reputation.

6 Tom Johnson:

Turned the ball over when England looked to attack from a line-out and his workrate was poor – only a couple of carries and made no ground to speak of.

5 Geoff Parling:

He was one of England's most prolific carries of the ball – often making good ground. His tackle count was second only to Waldrom and worked hard at the breakdown.

4 Tom Palmer:

Impressed with some good early carries and made good ground. While he looked good of defence in the first half, he faded after the break and slipped a couple of tackles after the break.

3 Dan Cole:

Put his body on the line, but also pushed the envelope and conceded a few penalties. His scrumming was also not the greatest and his hands let him down on occasion.

2 Tom Youngs:

Made plenty of tackles, but conceded two crucial penalties – including one late in the second half when England were pushing for a try that would have given them the lead. He also started slipping tackles after the break. Could have been subbed earlier.

Held Sharpe up for an early turnover, but he was constantly under pressure in the scrums and conceded a number of penalties. Should have been subbed earlier.

Not only steadied the scrum, but made an impact in general play. However, a crucial penalty when he put hands in the scrum cost his team.

Made no real impact – a couple of ineffective runs, a few tackles and also slipped a tackle.
