Player ratings: Scant reward
OPINION: Argentina gave South Africa an almighty scare, but ultimately fell short – losing 18-24 in their World Cup warm-up match in Pretoria on Saturday.
Forwards Guido Petti and skipper Pablo Matera each scored a try for Argentina.
Joaquin Diaz Bonilla kicked a conversion and a penalty and Benjamin Urdapilleta a penalty.
Jan de Koning rates the Argentinean players!
15 Joaquín Tuculet:
Was well-marked by the Springbok defence and got very little reward for his many runs.
14 Sebastián Cancelliere:
Went missing for large periods of the game.
13 Jerónimo de la Fuente:
Had few chances on attack, but made most of his tackles and won two turnovers.
12 Lucas Mensa:
Was Los Pumas biggest threat on attack – making 70 metres and almost 10 metres per carry. Also made all his tackles.
11 Ramiro Moyano:
Struggled against the tight Bok defence and also slipped a crucial tackle.
10 Joaquín Díaz Bonilla:
Seems to struggle with the pace of international rugby and his defence needs work.
9 Felipe Ezcurra:
When you have negative metres, you know the defence had your number. Made most of his tackles and won a turnover.
8 Javier Ortega Desio:
His workrate was disappointing and managed just three tackles.
7 Marcos Kremer:
Struggled with the Springboks’ physicality. Did make all but one of his attempted tackles.
6 Pablo Matera (captain):
Was everything that was great about Los Pumas – energetic, physical and non-stop.
5 Tomás Lavanini:
Discipline remains an issue. Penalised for an illegal, grass-cutter type tackle early in the match. Recklessly charged into other tackles as well.
4 Guido Petti:
Was Los Pumas’ most productive forward with the ball in hand, made all his tackles and won a turnover.
3 Santiago Medrano:
Solid in the scrums, busy with the ball in hand and made most of his tackles.
2 Julian Montoya:
His basics were solid and made all his tackles. His work ethic can improve.
1 Mayco Vivas:
Made all his tackles and was solid in the set pieces. His work ethic can improve.
16 Santiago Socino (on for Montoya, 78th minute):
Not enough time to be rated.
17 Nahuel Tetaz Chaparro (on for Vivas, 55th minute):
Struggled in the set pieces, but made all his tackles. Need to improve his workrate.
18 Juan Figallo (on for Medrano, 55th minute):
One of the more productive replacements, making plenty of carries – even though he got little reward.
19 Matías Alemanno (on for Kremer, 55th minute):
Had 10 carries, even though he did not make many metres. Made all his tackles.
20 Tomás Lezana (on for Desio, 47th minute):
Made plenty of metres in his handful of caries and made all his tackles.
21 Gonzalo Bertranou (on for Ezcurra, 55th minute):
Did the basics well. Nothing flash.
22 Benjamin Urdapilleta (on for Bonilla, 55th minute):
Steady rather than spectacular.
