Brawling Wallaby avoids conviction

Wallabies wing Digby Ioane has avoided conviction over an assault at a Melbourne hotel by being placed on a diversion program, after he appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday.

The 28-year-old Ioane, who played for the Queensland Reds in the latest Super Rugby season but is moving to Stade Francais in the Top 14 French domestic competition later this year, was charged with unlawfully assaulting a man in the Melbourne suburb of Prahran on March 9.

Ioane, who has played 35 tests for Australia, will face court again in October to ensure he has complied with the conditions of the program, the Australian Associated Press reported.

The diversion allows first-time offenders to acknowledge responsibility and be released without conviction.
