Deans: We couldn't put Scotland away

Wallabies coach Robbie Deans was left disappointed with his side's 9-6 defeat to Scotland considering the amount of possession and territory Australia had.

The match was played in awful weather, with a strong wind and sheets of rain coming down, but that should be no excuse for a side of Australia's caliber.

The Wallabies held the vast majority of the possession with the win at their backs in the second half, and spent almost the entire 40 minutes after half-time inside Scotland's 22m line. However, the Scots defended bravely and refused to let Australia cross the tryline.

"We had enough possession to put the game out of reach and credit to Scotland, we just couldn't put them away," Deans said.

"We started the second half really well, we had momentum and in conditions like that when you don't turn the scoreboard over things get messier as the game goes on. We lacked co-ordination to get the job done.

"We've got another Test match [against Wales] on Saturday, first thing we'll have to do is recover and look at the blokes.

"We'll select 22 for Saturday, some who would have played today [Tuesday]. We'll have to assess how the guys pull up."

Wallabies scrumhalf Will Genia was left equally annoyed that the team were unable to convert possession and territory in the second half into more points.

"They had the one opportunity in the second half and they took it, full credit to Scotland.

"The conditions played a big part in the game, we had plenty of possession and we had to tick the scoreboard over and we didn't.

"We'll go away and we'll prepare as well as we can, it's a new Test match, it's a new game. We'll learn from this match. Like Robbie said last time we lost to Samoa good things happened."
