Former Wallaby suffers spinal injury
NEWS: Richard Tombs, a former Wallaby centre, suffered a spinal injury playing in a social soccer match in Sydney last weekend and remains in Royal North Shore Hospital.
The incident was described as a “tragic, freak accident”. Rugby Australia Chief Executive Raelene Castle said the thoughts of the entire Australian Rugby community are with the Tombs family.
“Our thoughts are with Richard and his family at this very difficult time and we are remaining in close contact with the family regarding his condition.
“Most importantly, Richard is receiving the best possible care and strong support from friends and family.
“He will have the full power of the Rugby community behind him as he confronts these very challenging circumstances,” said Castle.

Last Saturday Richard suffered a severe spinal injury playing in an over 35s football game at Lionel Watts Reserve in Belrose.
He underwent surgery that evening but the full extent of his injury is not clear at this stage.
Richard is conscious and stable in the intensive care ward at the Royal North Shore Hospital.
What happened was a just a tragic, freak accident while Richard was playing goalkeeper.
His wife Carissa, the couple’s three daughters Latika, Talani and Ukiesha and the rest of Richard’s family have been overwhelmed by the support they have received and wish to say thank you to everyone who has reached out to them.
But as you will understand they request their privacy as they deal with this very difficult situation and Richard is not allowed visitors.

The family are also grateful for the dedication and compassion of all staff at Royal North Shore and the paramedic team.
They appreciate Richard is receiving outstanding care.
