After this crunch weekend, the European Rugby Cup is able to produce the quarterfinalists for both the Heineken Cup and the Amlin Challenge Cup.
The eight quarterfinalists for the Heineken Cup are: Munster, Biarritz, Clermont Auvergne, Stade Français, Toulouse, Leinster, Ospreys and Northampton Saints.
The Guinness premiership was recently described as the strongest league in the rugby world. There is only one side from that league in the last eight and it is ranked eighth – Northampton Saints. France has four teams, Ireland two and Wales and England one each.
The Amlin quarterfinalists are more difficult to work out – the five pool winners plus those ranked 9, 10 and 11 in the Heineken. The final pool winner was not decided till Bourgoin went to Leeds to play. The pool winners are Bourgoin, Connacht, Toulon, Wasps and Newcastle Falcons. The Heineken sides who play in the Amlin will be Cardiff Blues, Gloucester and Scarlets.
Those knock-out stages of both competitions are in April, after the Six Nations.
Finalists have been decided in Japan.
