Moore to take Wallaby reins?

Brumbies hooker Stephen Moore looks the man mostly likely to be given the Wallabies captaincy reins by coach Ewen McKenzie on Monday.

With Ben Mowen out of the selection frame due to his upcoming move abroad, his 31-year-old Brumbies teammate Moore has emerged as the leading candidate.

With just over a year to go until the next World Cup the appointment could be a significant one, with Moore's likeliest competition to come from a long-term option like the Waratahs' Michael Hooper.

McKenzie is keen to continue the strong discipline in the squad following the fall-out from a mass suspension he naded out for breaking team curfew on their European tour at the end of last year, and the hard-nosed Moore is seen as the best man for that job.

Brumbies coach Laurie Fisher told AAP that Moore's leadership skills are obvious.

"What sets him apart from a lot of people is his diligence, his preparation and his mindset that he really leaves no stone unturned," said Fisher.

"He's a tremendous professional and he's reliable.

"He doesn't get sidetracked by other issues and I think that's a tremendous attribute to have.

"He's a workrate player … you know what you're going to get."

Reds duo of lock James Horwill and scrumhalf Will Genia have done the job in the past, but both have come under pressure to keep their place in the starting line-up with the Brumbies' Nic White breathing down Genia's neck.

White admitted that he has been driven this season by the desire to start for the Wallabies.

"It's everything mate. It's what you play for. You play to start. And you play to play in Test matches against big teams," he said.

"It's a good problem for Ewen to have. It's all good headaches," he said.
