Rugby Australia and Folau fail to reach 'amicable solution'

UPDATE: Mediation between Rugby Australia and fallen star Israel Folau ended without agreement on Monday, but talks will continue on Wednesday.

Folau and RA went to the Federal Court in Melbourne on Monday for a mediation meeting over his Aus$14 million (US$9.5 million) compensation claim against Rugby Australia.

Folau was fired in May for “high-level” misconduct after an Instagram post in April.

The former Wallabies fullback is demanding Aus$14 million (US$9.5 million) in compensation, claiming he was unlawfully dismissed under legislation that disallows sackings because of a person’s religion.

The governing body insists his termination was purely contractual.

A trial has been set for February unless the mediation in Melbourne is successful.

However, after the mediations ended on Monday, Folau’s solicitor George Haros revealed to Stuff that the two parties weren’t able to reach an “amicable solution” just yet.

Nonetheless, Haros remains hopeful that they will ‘reach one an agreement in the coming days’

After talks ended on Monday, Rugby Australia put out a short statement confirming talks had been adjourned, and that negotiations would resume Wednesday.
