The Australian camp released a statement, revealing that Tupou ‘was the victim of a phone snatch 50 metres from the team hotel’ in Sandton, north of Johannesburg, ahead of their Rugby Championship opener on Saturday.

Tupou had been with the eight other players for an organised dinner across the road from the hotel when the incident occurred at 21.15 (SA time).

“We went out for dinner with the front-rowers, it was just outside the hotel and I went back, someone came from behind and took my phone,” Tupoa said.

“I thought it was one of the boys so I looked back and he was wearing a hoodie and ran with my phone.

“I tried to chase after him, he got in the car and I got a bit of a cut but I’m fine.

“The only thing is I lost my phone but I can live with that.”

The 22-year-old has been treated for the cuts and will be monitored ahead of their opening Rugby Championship Test against South Africa on Saturday at Ellis Park.
