On Wednesday, the Director of Rugby was officially unveiled as the team’s new head coach, and he will be assisted by a familiar face in the form of fellow Bok Ruan Pienaar.

Pienaar will be the backline coach, and Izak van der Westhuizen will return to his former role as forwards coach.

“It’s an interesting time. I think we are trying to build something special here,” said Steyn.

“Even when I was still playing, I couldn’t imagine finishing at the Free State Cheetahs and then getting the job afterwards, and now we need to make it work.

“I’ve got two big men [Pienaar and Van der Westhuizen] next to me that will help me so.”

Steyn knows that a tough road lies ahead when it comes to turning the Cheetahs into a powerhouse again.

“I think it will be difficult,” said Steyn.

“I am more nervous about the coaching than the vision that I have.

“In my heart, I want us to play good winning rugby.”

Meanwhile, Rory Duncan, CEO of the Free State Cheetahs, believes the experience that the coaching team has developed during their playing days will help take the team to new heights.

“This is Frans and Ruan’s debut as coaches,” said Duncan.

“They were both exceptional and versatile players, and their range of experience can only benefit the team.

“I strongly believe in allowing people to grow, and as a company, we will support them in their campaign.”

The Cheetahs’ SA Cup campaign kicks off on Saturday, March 8, against Boland, followed by their first home game on Friday, March 14, against the Leopards at the Free State Stadium.
