England block out the Henry Pollock noise
SPOTLIGHT: England loose forward Henry Pollock has been at the centre of conversation ahead of the Nations Championship opener against the Springboks at Ellis Park on Saturday.
Pollock, who is set to face the Boks for the first time in his international career, has grabbed the spotlight, sparked debate, and added an extra layer to the Test match build-up.
The 21-year-old, widely regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in World Rugby, has already developed a reputation among the South African faithful.
His off-the-ball antics, self-belief, and flamboyant style have divided opinion, with some fans labelling him cocky and believing he needs to be brought down a peg or two.
While the Pollock conversation continues on the outside, Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has said the Boks won’t feed too much into the narrative.
Instead, Erasmus, on two occasions, spoke highly of Pollock’s play, even going to the extent where he described him as a “flipping good player”.
A teammate of Pollock’s who echoes Erasmus’s sentiments is Ben Earl, and he believes the youngster is a positive addition to the squad.
“He is playing so well, and he’s been playing so well for so long now,” Earl said.
“Don’t forget, he was on the British and Irish Lions Tour last year and was the youngest ever tourist or second ever youngest, something crazy like that.
“He’s an amazing talent and amazing guy to have in the squad.”
While he hasn’t had the opportunity to prove himself against the Boks, Pollock has shown his quality several times against some top teams.
He brings an unconventional style of play in the England setup, one that could inspire the visitors come matchday.
The youngster is also brimming with confidence after aiding the Northampton Saints to a Premiership title, beating Exeter Chiefs 26-17 a fortnight ago.
When firing on all cylinders, Pollock can be a nuisance to the opposition, and Earl would love nothing more than to have him on the matchday squad.
“I’m really pleased for him [For winning the Premiership].
“As someone asked me, is it easier playing in your first or second season, and I always find it gets harder and harder, so he seems to be relishing every opportunity.
“It will be great if he’s involved on the weekend. It will be amazing to have him on our side for sure.
“He’s been great around camp; people have felt the buzz of being around him, and that’s great.”
“I might have messed this up…” 😰@henryjpollock looks back on his score against Australia from November 2025, his first try for England at @allianz_stad.
