England sweat over Nowell's World Cup fitness
INJURY UPDATE: England coach Eddie Jones faces an anxious wait to hear the verdict on Jack Nowell.
The Exeter wing suffered an ankle injury during his side’s loss to Saracens in the Premiership final at Twickenham.
Jones was a concerned onlooker as Nowell, who had an outstanding game, was treated on the field before limping off 10 minutes from the end of Saracens’ 37-34 victory on Saturday.
“Jack will have the usual scans but it is too early to say how bad it is. He was in a lot of pain but we can only hope for the best,” said Exeter director of rugby Rob Baxter.
The 26-year-old will now have a scan in the next 24 hours to see the extent of the damage.
Nowell, who was on crutches after the game, has had ankle problems in recent times and will be hoping the news is not too bad with Jones finalising his training camp shortly in the build-up to this year’s World Cup in Japan.
Jones has long been a fan of Nowell, capped 33 times by England, and has even suggested he could be deployed as a ‘ninth forward’ because of his skills in the ruck.
