Player ratings: Inches away

England will be hugely frustrated that they could not take it past the All Blacks who piped them twice in two weeks

England's first half performance was impressive but the space on the scoreboard was not enough as the All Blacks came flying out in the second half.

The Roses got themselves within one point with a late Ashton try, but again they will be left frustrated as the All Blacks take the series 2-0.

Stuart Lancaster should be proud of his men's performance, each time they come against the world champions it is a monumental tussel, and with the world cup at home looming, it might just be the edge they need

Darryn Pollock rates the England players.

15 Mike Brown:

Quiet by his standards, maybe carrying a bit of an injury but popped up in the right place to grab a controversial try.

6/10

14 Manusamoa Tuilagi:

As expected of him, ran hard and direct but it is clear he is a centre, lacking that finishing edge.

7/10

13 Luther Burrell:

Both centres were very direct and gave a lot of stability in defense, his hard tackling stopped the All Blacks dead.

7/10

12 Billy Twelvetrees:

Found some good gaps in his direct running and was the one who marshaled the defense.

6/10

11 Marland Yarde:

Good work coming off his wing for the first try, he had an eye for the gaps and ran good lines but faded when the All Blacks took over.

7/10

10 Owen Farrell:

Ran the game with precision in his passing and his kicking, but faded away later in the game after getting a yellow card.

5/10

9 Danny Care:

Looked lively and played cleverly, but some times was too excitable causing him to make mistakes.

6/10

8 Ben Morgan:

Known for ball carrying but if his name was mentioned twice, it was a lot.

4/10

7 Chris Robshaw:

Played his role well, getting his hands on the ball to slow things down at the rucks, hard grafter.

7/10

6 Tom Wood:

Another one who was quiet, but did find himself involved in some rucks.

5/10

5 Geoff Parling:

Outstanding in all facets of play, a real tower of strength from the breakdowns to his slick passing – a real hero of the game.

9/10

4 Joe Launchbury:

Overshadowed by his second-row partner but grafted in the tight phases and line-outs.

5/10

3 David Wilson:

Great chip kick to relieve pressure, scrummed well and carried decently, hard worker for a prop.

7/10

2 Rob Webber:

Did his job in the tight and set pieces, got more involved in the game as it went on.

6/10

1 Joe Marler:

lazy around the park, but scrummed well.

3/10

Replacements:

16 Dylan Hartley  (on for Webber, 47th minute)

Good at the line out but was quiet in open play.

5/10

17 Matt Mullan (on for Marler, 71st minute)

Not enough time to be rated.

18 Kieran Brookes (on for Wilson, 76th minute)

Not enough time to be rated.

19 Courtney Lawes (on for Launchbury, 57th minute)

Worked hard in the set phases.

6/10

20 Billy Vunipola (on for Morgan, 57th minute)

Made no real impact, which he really should have coming off the bench.

4/10

21 Ben Youngs (on for Care, 71st minute)

Came on when his team was under the pump and couldn't do much for them.

5/10

22 Freddie Burns.

Not used

23 Chris Ashton (on for Burrell, 74 minute)

scored a consolation try with an unnecessary dive.

5/10
