Player ratings: No cigar
England came close to becoming the first team to beat the All Blacks at Eden Park since 1994, but came up just short in the end.
It was a spirited performanced from the depleted and unfancied visitors who had largely been written off against the All Blacks, but they pushed them all the way in a gutsy display.
England played with passion and intensity from the outset and pushed the All Blacks all the way until a late Conrad Smith try saw the hosts snatch a 20-15 victory.
The forward pack really fronted up to the All Blacks and laid a good platform in a game dominated by tactical kicking, but they could not produce a try as the home team's defence held out well.
Stuart Lancaster's team can take great heart from their performance, but they will know that next week will be an even greater challenge as the All Blacks look to bounce back from their indifferent display.
We rate the England players:
15 Mike Brown
Did not show the same sort of form that he hit in the Six Nations, but recovered from sloppy start and posed a threat on the counter-attack.
6/10
14 Marland Yarde
Although he did not get many chances with the ball in hand, he was tireless on defence as he chased and tackled hard until his late yellow card which proved very costly.
6/10
13 Manu Tuilagi
Ran hard and straight all game, often making valuable ground and committing more than one tackler. His pace and power made him a tricky customer in midfield and he also made some big tackles.
7/10
12 Kyle Eastmond
An impressive outing from the Rugby League convert who showed great composure against the experienced All Blacks centres. Showed he has a devastating step and distributed well.
7/10
11 Jonny May
Ran hard and came within inches of scoring after following up on a well-weighted kick but got caught out of position at times and missed a few high balls.
6/10
10 Freddie Burns
Got up quickly on defence as he set the tone, his tactical kicking was something of a mixed bag but a generally reliable performance.
6/10
9 Ben Youngs
Not a great game for the scrumhalf who did not provide his usual standard of service and was caught offside. Played with plenty of urgency, just not enough accuracy.
5/10
8 Ben Morgan
Made his presence felt on attack and defence with some big runs from the base of the scrum and some massive hits as the England pack took the game to their hosts.
7/10
7 Chris Robshaw
An inspirational display from the skipper who was simply everywhere. He did his usual hard work on defence, but really stood out with the ball in hand, finding space and getting some great offloads away.
8/10
6 James Haskell
A hard-working performance from the experienced flank who made valuable ground for his side but faded out of the game a bit later on.
6/10
5 Geoff Parling
Very reliable in the line-outs and got around the park well to make his presence felt in the loose exchanges as well.
6/10
4 Joe Launchbury
Worked hard in the tight and got through plenty of tackles in a tireless defensive effort.
6/10
3 David Wilson
His hands let him down a few times, but he was dominant in his primary role at scrum-time where he gave the experienced Tony Woodcock a tough time.
7/10
2 Rob Webber
An impressive outing from the hooker who was solid in the line-outs and used his mobility to put in a big shift around the park as well, showing some neat touches.
7/10
1 Joe Marler
Anchored the scrum well and gained momentum as the game went on and the All Blacks rung the front row changes whilst he tackled hard as well.
6/10
Replacements:
16 Joe Gray (On for Webber, 70 mins)
Nothing spectacular in his short time on the pitch but got his core role done.
6/10
17 Matt Mullan
Not used.
18 Henry Thomas (On for Wilson, 70 mins)
Solid in his short time on the park.
6/10
19 Dave Attwood (On for Launchbury, 70 mins)
Got stuck into the All Blacks pack and made some hard tackles in his 10 minutes.
7/10
20 Tom Johnson (On for Haskell, 70 mins)
Worked hard and made his tackles but did not get many chances to carry the ball.
6/10
21 Lee Dickson (On for Youngs, 79 mins)
Not enough time to be rated.
22 Danny Cipriani (On for Burns, 71 mins)
Made an immediate impact as he took the ball up well to win a penalty which he kicked over, made his tackles although defence has never been his strength.
7/10
23 Chris Pennell
Not used.
