PLAYER RATINGS: Way off the pace

Defence remains a problem for the Italians. However, they can be proud of their efforts on attack against the English.

Warren Fortune rates the Italian players!

15 Matteo Minozzi:

He certainly kept the English defence on their toes with a number of carries, but his decision making was not always the best.

5/10

14 Tommaso Benvenuti:

Defensive work doesn't seem to be his strong point as he missed a number of tackles out wide. He did have a lot of opportunities with ball in hand, but he did score one of his side's two tries.

4/10

13 Tommaso Boni:

The big man was one of Italy's best players. He got Italy over the gain-line on a few occasions with his big frame and played a big role in the build-up to Italy's first try.

7/10

12 Tommaso Castello:

Like Boni, he had his opportunities with ball in hand, but he wasn't as effective as his midfield partner.

5/10

11 Mattia Bellini:

It was a bit of a mixed bag from the wing. He was one of his team's try-scorers, but he also made a few mistakes with ball in hand.

5/10

10 Tommaso Allan:

It took him some time to get into the game and he was flat in the flyhalf channel. However, he did produce some brilliant touches with the ball, especially his pass to Tommaso Benvenuti for Italy's first try.

6/10

9 Marcello Violi:

His distribution was average from the base of the ruck and he just seemed too predictable on the field.

4/10

8 Sergio Parisse:

He did more talking than playing. He did not have that robust and energetic performance on the field that we are used to.

4/10

7 Renato Giammarioli:

He conceded a number of turnovers and he was basically a passenger on the field for most of the game.

3/10

6 Sebastian Negri:

He made little or no impact with his carries and he was another culprit in terms of conceding turnovers.

3/10

5 Dean Budd:

He was strong in the tackle and did his part in the line-outs, but he needed to make a bigger impact with ball in hand.

5/10

4 Alessandro Zanni:

He put his body on the line every time he got the ball and he made some good metres against a strong English defence. However, he gave away a few penalties.

6/10

3 Simone Ferrari:

He had a difficult time in the scrums and he gave away a penalty against Mako Vunipola. He was virtually non-existent in open play.

2/10

2 Leonardo Ghiraldini:

The veteran was guilty of giving away a few penalties, but you had to admire his energy around the park and his willingness to fight for his side.

4/10

1 Andrea Lovotti:

Like his teammate on the other side of the scrum, he was put under immense pressure. However, he put in some big hits on defence.

3/10.

Replacements:

16 Luca Bigi (On for Ghiraldini, 53rd min):

Italy would have been better off leaving Ghiraldini on the field.

2/10

17 Nicola Quaglio (On for Lovotti, 40th min):

He let his team down on defence and he was not much better in the scrums either.

2/10

18 Tiziano Pasquali (On for Ferrari, 53rd min):

He put in a few tackles, but like most props these days he went missing for large periods.

2/10

19 George Biagi (On for Budd, 60th min):

His impact was limited against a strong English pack.

2/10

20 Maxime Mbanda (On for Giammarioli, 49th min):

He was definitely more abrasive on defence and he carried the ball well.

5/10

21 Edoardo Gori (On for Violi, 62nd min):

He did absolutely nothing but pass the ball.

2/10

22 Carlo Canna (On for Allan, 72nd min):

Not enough time to be rated.

23 Jayden Hayward (On for Castello, 72nd min):

Not enough time to rated.
