SPOTLIGHT: Springbok flyhalf Handre Pollard is “ready for another test of character” as he begins his long road to recovery.

Pollard, 26, who lifted the Webb Ellis trophy last November, suffered a serious knee injury in Montpellier’s Top 14 defeat to Racing 92 last weekend.

Montpellier confirmed that Pollard will be out of action “for many months after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament”.

In a post on social media, the Bok flyhalf broke his silence on the injury.

“This beautiful game we play has so many highs and brings so much joy to our hearts, but on the flip side in a second it can take you to a very deep low,” said Pollard.

“Injuries are a part of this game we love and this is just another test of character. I am really sad that I have to leave my @mhr_officiel [Montpellier] brothers so early in the season, I will be supporting you all the way.

“I am ready for the challenge ahead and coming out on the other side stronger than ever before.”

Pollard is not the only Bok World Cup-winner facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Lock Lodewyk de Jager is expected to be out of action for “five to six months” with another shoulder reconstruction.

Lood’s fellow World Cup-winning lock, RG Snyman, recovering from a knee reconstruction after being hurt playing for Munster and will also be on the sidelines for the about six months.

Meanwhile, Eben Etzebeth is recovering from a rib injury he sustained in the opening round of the French Top 14 while playing for Toulon.
