Aplon's French move in doubt

Doubt has been cast over reports linking Springbok and Stormers outside back Gio Aplon to French clubs.

Reports in the French media have suggested Aplon could move to the Top 14 at the end of the season.

However, sources at the Stormers have rubbished the suggestion, making it clear his contract doesn't expire till the end of 2014 – which means he would be unlikely to join any French club at the start of their season in August.

The 31-year-old speedster, who can play both fullback and wing, is reportedly in the sights of Grenoble, who are currently in sixth position in the Top 14.

The French outfit have already secured the signature of Racing Metro flyhalf Jonathan Wisniewski, and according to French newspaper Midi Olympique they are 'close to signing' Aplon as well.

Aplon has 17 Springbok caps to his name but last featured for the national side back in 2012 when he played fullback in the drawn Test against England in Port Elizabeth.

Although he was part of the 32-man squad that toured Europe at the end of last year following an impressive Currie Cup campaign with Western Province, Aplon did not get an opportunity to play.
