Bordeaux-Begles 'releases' All Black

CONTRACT NEWS: Bordeaux-Begles approved an early contract release for All Black centre Seta Tamanivalu.

The New Zealander is planning to move to Japan.

Tamanivalu, 28, touched down in Bordeaux in 2018 and was under contract until June 2021.

He will now leave at the end of October.

Bordeaux president Laurent Marti, in reference to the Covid-19 pandemic, said a contract release was reasonable “given the financial difficulties the club has in the current crisis”.

The former Crusaders midfielder, capped four times by the All Blacks, played 27 times in the Top 14 and seven European Challenge Cup games in two injury-hit seasons.

Tamanivalu has played for the southwestern French club just once this season, copping a red card that saw him pick up a three-match ban.

He is named as a replacement on the teamsheet for Bordeaux’s match against Pau on Saturday.
