Villiere, 25, scored twice in Les Bleus’ first away victory over the Wallabies since 1990 and will have the operation on Wednesday but the length of his unavailability was not specified.

“All of Toulon wish Gabin a prompt recovery while waiting to see his energy and vivacity on the field as quick as possible,” the three-time European champions said.

Toulon finished eighth in the Top 14 last season and start the new campaign by hosting Montpellier on the weekend of September 4.

Les Bleus’ next game is on November 6 against Argentina but will be without captain and Villiere’s club team-mate Charles Ollivon who has been sidelined until the end of the year with anterior cruciate knee damage.
