Montpellier posted a picture of him outside their Altrad Stadium on Monday.

He is due to start training on Thursday but spoke with South African international brothers Jannie and Bismarck Du Plessis on Monday.

He is Montpellier's marquee signing and, the club hopes he will allow supporters to forget about the departure of France international flyhalf and fan-favourite Francois Trinh-Duc to Toulon a year ago.

Cruden has less than two weeks to prepare himself for the start of the new Top 14 season on August 26 when Montpellier host Agen.

Under South African World Cup winning coach Jake White, Montpellier finished third in the regular season last time out but lost 13-22 at home to then-champions Racing 92 in the play-off quarterfinals.

Cruden's compatriot Vern Cotter will coach the side this season.

The flyhalf won the World Cup with New Zealand in 2011 and has scored 322 points in 50 internationals for the All Blacks.

He won Super Rugby with the Chiefs in 2012 and 2013.
