"He was without a contract since the end of [last] season with Toulon," a club statement read.

The 36-year-old arrived at Toulon last season after 14 years with rivals Toulouse but only played four times after suffering two serious Achilles tendon injuries which required surgery.

A winner of three European Champions Cup titles with Toulouse and the Top 14 in 2008, Clerc has scored 98 tries in the French championship – two short of Laurent Arbo's record.

The 67-times capped Clerc is also the second-highest all-time try scorer for France with 34 and the second highest try-scorer in the European Champions Cup with 36, one less than new teammate Chris Ashton.
