Glenwood beat Kelston

In a first, Glenwood played against Kelston Boys’ High from New Zealand on Tuesday 17 July and won well.

The Green Machine, after a lengthy lay-off, shot out the blocks against Kelston Boy’s High School. Despite the New Zealanders’ superior size the Glenwood boys recorded a comfortable 36-10 win, scoring six tries to two.

Steen Smith, Storm Pearton, Andrich Arlow, Kyle Cooper, Allen Zungu and captain Dean Muir grabbed one try each, with three conversions from Pearton.

Kelston are the first school in Glenwood’s 97-year history to visit them from New Zealand, and Glenwood are already planning to reciprocate with a tour Down Under sometime in the near future.

Before he moved into full-time professional coaching, current All Blacks coach Graham Henry was Headmaster of Kelston, which is the only State Boys’ school in West Auckland, is 52 years old and has a roll of 1150 students. The School enrolls students from a very broad geographical area and the zone encompasses the entire City of Waitakere.

Old Boys include Steven Bates, Sione Lauaki, Kees Meeuws, Mils Muliaina, Kevin Senio, Mose Tuiali’i, Sam Tuitupou and Va’aiga Tuigamala – all of them All Blacks. In addition Loki Crichton, John Senio, and Tuigamala player for Samoa.
