NPC: Tasman tame Lions

The Tasman Makos have continued their remarkable run, defeating Wellington 42-20 in their first win over the Lions in their sixth meeting.

It was blue chip stuff from the tourists who have now confirmed their status as a genuine threat for the trophy.

It was Tasman’s fifth win of the season, an outstanding return in their seventh match of the regular season, and will ensure that the union finishes the round in third position in the Premiership.

While recriminations will continue for Wellington, this was a match where registering 20 points was an achievement against a Makos side playing a compelling brand of rugby.

They scored points soon after Wellington did, hit the Lions ball carriers with intent to turnover, and ran direct straight lines with plenty of players hanging off each shoulder for support.

Meanwhile, despite playing in conditions which Waikato captain Brad Weber would later admit should have suited his team, the Mooloo crashed to one of their heaviest ever defeats in the rivalry, with Otago putting together a rampant 38-7 victory.

It was a great turnaround for the team that had sought a mental focus after failng to record any points against the Magpies, and this was delivered with a performance leaking with tactical clarity.

They ran when they needed to, kicked and chased when it was required, and played Waikato’s dangerous attack out of the game while the blue and gold forwards put together an impressive display to allow their backline – and in particular Hayden Parker – to shine.
