Player Ratings: New Zealand
OPINION: The All Blacks will head into their first Test against the Springboks with three wins in the bag after they recorded a 50-19 victory over the Bulls in Pretoria on Saturday.
However, there will still be a lot to work on for Dave Rennie and his coaching team as they look to iron out a few things.
See below for the All Blacks Players Ratings after their Loftus Versfeld win:
15 Beauden Barrett
He might have lost some speed over the years, but he still showed glimpses on attack. He joined the line on attack several occasions, and he had a try assist for the opening score. His pinpoint high ball also played a role in the build-up to his team’s second try.
7/10
14 Leroy Carter
The speedster just never stopped running. There was a great run in the build-up to Josh Moorby’s first try, and he also won a ball in the air, which eventually led to Moorby’s second try. The wing produced some great finishing to score his team’s fifth try early in the second half, and he then showed off his speed to beat his man and feed the ball to Ioane to race away for a score. There was enough in the tank to get a second try late in the second half.
9/10
13 Rieko Ioane
He ran the Bulls ragged when he had the ball. He made more metres than anyone else on the field, and his awareness to interchange between centre and the wing will be a huge asset in the Tests. He produced a try assist for Leroy Carter, and he offered great support play to receive a ball and score a try in the 49th minute.
9/10
12 Anton Lienert-Brown
Sometimes it looked like he was running in slow motion, but he still had a great eye for the gaps and his distribution on attack was good more often than not.
6/10
11 Josh Moorby
The try-scoring machine showed off his great footwork to score the first try in the corner. He completed his brace with some more great finishing. However, he won’t be too happy with his defending leading up to the Bulls’ first and second tries.
7.5/10
10 Josh Jacomb
Denied Willie le Roux a brilliant penalty touch-finder with a dive in his own 22. A few minutes later he put the Bulls under pressure with a fantastic 50-22. There was also the amazing cover defence in the 50th minute after a grubber by the Bulls. He was also threatening attack, and he was on hand to provide an assist for Leroy Carter’s second try.
7.5/10
9 Cortez Ratima
There was variety on attack and a lot of it stemmed from his decision-making. His kicking was not always accurate, but it got better as the first half went on. He was replaced at half-time.
6/10
8 Peter Lakai
The big man ran through a defender before producing a great offload to Moorby to go and score his second. Another powerful run played a huge role in Leroy Carter’s try early in the second half. There were a few wrong options, but he was a hard man to stop in this match.
7/10
7 Anton Segner
His prowess at the breakdown seems to be getting better. There were a couple of brilliant turnovers when his team was under pressure in their own 22. He also showed great power to hold up Marcell Coetzee over the tryline in the 69th minute.
9/10
6 Simon Parker
His performance grew as the game went on, but it wasn’t as sharp as he would’ve liked it to be.
6.5/10
5 Patrick Tuipulotu
He did the hard work in the physical exchanges that doesn’t always get noticed. The bruiser was also a disruptive presence hovering around the breakdowns.
6/10
4 Fabian Holland
A huge shift by the big man and a bit of a mixed bag as well. He was a huge presence in the physical exchanges and showed some nice touches with ball in hand. An example was his flick pass to his captain for a try just before the break. He will also be gutted that he couldn’t hold onto the ball with a tryline in front of him in the 30th minute.
7/10
3 Tyrel Lomax
A solid figure in the scrums, and he put in a 60-minute shift. He carried the ball strongly and his work rate on defence will get a tick from Dave Rennie.
7/10
2 Codie Taylor (captain)
He was guilty of a neck roll in the eighth minute when his team was on attack. However, he started to gather momentum, and he led by example with a tap penalty before going on to score his team’s third try. The veteran also showed his experience and power when he bulldozed his way over for another try just before half-time.
8/10
1 Xavier Numia
The prop destroyed Francois Klopper in a few scrums. One of those came in the 12th minute when he won his team a penalty when they were under pressure in their own 22. He was also physical in the rucks.
8.5/10
Replacements:
16 Samisoni Taukei’aho (On for Codie Taylor)
His line-out throwing was okay and he did his fair share on defence.
5.5/10
17 George Bower (On for Xavier Numia)
There were a few huge hits on defence and the scrum was stable.
5.5/10
18 Siale Lauaki (On for Tyrel Lomax)
Not too much to write home about. He was solid in the scrums.
5.5/10
19 Josh Lord (On for Patrick Tuipulotu)
He just failed to make an impact off the bench.
5/10
20 Wallace Sititi (On for Peter Lakai)
Broke through the defence to score a try in the 77th minute. There was some good impact from him off the bench.
7/10
21 Kyle Preston (on for Cortez Ratima)
Just seemed that he couldn’t get going. There were a few good passes out wide to his backline.
6/10
22 Timoci Tavatavanawai (On for Anton Lienert-Brown)
Introduced himself by bulldozing his way over a couple of Bulls defenders. A few minutes later, his huge carry was a highlight in the build-up to Sititi’s try.
7/10
23 Emoni Narawa (On for Beauden Barrett)
