Springbok head coach Allister Coetzee told reporters in Durban on Monday that Paige could not continue with the normal return to play protocol because "he woke up with headaches" on Monday morning.

Van Zyl was one of two scrumhalves Coetzee had in mind to replace Paige.

Van Zyl joins Bok squad"The players that we are looking at to come in are Piet van Zyl from the Bulls and Nic Groom (Northampton Saints), who has been part of the squad. Those are the two candidates at this point in time," said Coetzee, before Van Zyl's call-up.

Meanwhile, Jesse Kriel and Bryan Habana will undergo further fitness tests on Tuesday to assess their progress from the respective injuries they picked up against Australia.

Wing Bryan Habana received a knock on the thigh, while Kriel left the field with a groin niggle.

Coetzee said he will be giving those two players as much time as possible to recover ahead of the New Zealand Test.

Damian de Allende (centre) and Malcolm Marx (hooker) have rejoined the camp in Durban after representing the Western Province and the Golden Lions in the Currie Cup. Lwazi Mvovo, who was released last week to play for the Sharks, had to undergo an appendix operation last week and has been ruled out of action.
