Player ratings: Ten for 15

South Africa produced a performance of clinical efficiency to shut out Scotland and secure a 28-0 win on Sunday.

In miserable conditions at Murrayfield and with a referee that seemed as skittish as the playing surface in the Scottish capital, the Boks succeeded for a second successive week to keep their opponents tryless.

The four tries to nil was less than what they deserved, given that a mixture of their brutal forward power and skilful backs left the Scots floundering.

However, the most impressive aspect was their determined defence in the second half when the home team had more than 70 percent of the ball.

15 Willie le Roux:

He is obviously working on his kicking game, probably under instructions, and was great under the highly ball. Then there was an intercept that killed off a promising looking Scottish attack, but the real gem was the chip-kick for JP Pietersen's try, after some great stepping. His defence was also great.

14 JP Pietersen:

Showed he is getting back to the pace of Test rugby, after last week's slow start. Not just did he show great finishing, but also good defence – especially a monster tackle on David Denton late in the match when the Scot looked likely to score.

13 Jaque Fourie:

Not too many opportunities on attack, but his defence was rock solid. Also getting back to the pace of Test rugby.

12 Jean de Villiers (captain):

Great work on defence – not just the tackles, – but the way he stopped the Scots in getting the ball wide by rushing up. Was unlucky not to get an intercept, just failed to hold on.

11 Bryan Habana:

The ball did not flow his way in the first half, but did well late in the game to turn around and get back to a kick that was put in behind him. Always works hard.

10 Pat Lambie:

Some really nice touches and great variation. It was not flawless though, as he slipped a couple of tackles, but overall he showed great maturity in testing conditions.

9 Fourie du Preez:

One really poor kick in the first half, otherwise it was classic Fourie du Preez. He even 'won' a line-out (from an overthrow).

8 Duane Vermeulen:

Showed his strength early on and made some monster hits – dislodging the ball on a few occasions. However, it is his work at the breakdown, such as that penalty turnover in the 60th minute, that showed his true value.

7 Willem Alberts:

He showed he is so much more than just  a bruiser, but his physicality brings great value to the Boks on defence.

6 Francois Louw:

Gave the Scots some of their own medicine on the ground and could have done with a bit more consistency from the referee.

5 Flip van der Merwe:

Great steal in first line-out and his contesting caused all kinds of problems for the Scots. May not have made much ground with his carries, but was a monster on defence.

4 Bakkies Botha:

Added the physicality you would expect of him. Great to have a player of his calibre to fall back onto if the youngsters get injured, even though he appeared a touch off the pace and missed a few tackles.

3 Frans Malherbe:

Lasted just more than half-an-hour, before limping off. Nothing spectacular, but also did nothing wrong. Was solid in the scrums.

2 Adriaan Strauss:

Some really good carries, even though he struggled at times to make the advantage line, and worked really at the breakdown, while he also produced a great tackle count in the second half.

1 Gurthrö Steenkamp:

Was impressive in the early stages and made all his tackles, but struggled to stay with the pace of the game after the break.

Replacements:

16 Bismarck du Plessis (on for Strauss, 60th min):

Won a great turnover penalty in the last 10 minutes, when the Scots had a rare foray into Bok 22, but had a few line-out misfires and missed a couple of tackles.

17 Tendai Mtawarira (on for Steenkamp, 56th min):

Made all his tackled and had a handful of carries, although he only made the advantage line once.

18 Coenie Oosthuizen (on for Malherbe, 35th min):

Had a few carries and worked hard at the breakdown – even giving away a penalty for hands in the rucks. His tackle count was just as impressive.

19 Eben Etzebeth (on for Botha, 59th min):

Stole a crucial line-out, made all his tackles and brought the physicality that he is known for.

20 Marcell Coetzee (on for Alberts, 41st min):

His work at the breakdown was immense – definitely beginning to play more like an openside flank. He made 13 tackles in his 40-minute stay and also won a line-out.

21 Ruan Pienaar (on for Du Preez, 64th min):

His kicking and passing game simply does not match that of Du Preez, although he did nothing wrong.

22 Morné Steyn (on for Louw, 75th min):

The Boks had run out of forward subs. Luckily it was a short stay. Not enough time to be rated.
