Bok's B-sample tested positive
NEWS: Springboks wing Aphiwe Dyantyi’s B-sample has tested positive for “performance-enhancing substances”
The Lions star was provisionally suspended after the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport notified him on August 14 that one of his urine samples had tested positive for a banned substance.
However over the weekend the 24-year-old denied taking any banned substances and exercised his right to have his B-sample analysed.

Following the test, SAIDS confirmed that his B-sample tested positive for performance-enhancing substances.
The SAIDS stated that “the B-sample was tested at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory at the University of the Free State which confirmed the A-sample results of the presence of the banned substances: methandienone, methyltestosterone and LGD-4033.
“These performance-enhancing substances are on the 2019 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods in Sport, and are banned in- and out-of-competition,”
Consequently, Dyantyi has been formally charged with a doping offence for multiple anabolic steroids and metabolites. The wing could be ban for a maximum of four years.
The SAIDS added: “Dyantyi has the right to contest the charge before an independent tribunal panel. If he disputes the charge and pleads not guilty, a hearing will be set down within the next four weeks, and he will be required to provide evidence that can prove his innocence,”
Meanwhile, Dyanti’s agent Gert van der Merwe admitted to rugby365com that the B-sample has tested positive.
However, he also revealed that Dyantyi’s camp is busy conducting their own test on the supplements he has taken in order to find if there was anything in it.
Van der Merwe added that they will reveal their findings as soon as all the test has been concluded.
Thus far SAIDS has informed SA Rugby, World Rugby and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) about the charges.
Dyantyi was the winner of the 2018 World Rugby Breakthrough Player of the Year award.
He has 13 Test caps and six tries to his name for the Springboks.
Full statement from SAIDS:
ON 13 August 2019 the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) informed Springbok and Lions rugby player Aphiwe Dyantyi that an adverse analytical finding had been detected in a sample collected from him in a doping test on 2 July 2019. The test was conducted in accordance with the National Anti-Doping Regulations.
Mr Dyantyi, who was provisionally suspended in light of the finding, exercised his right to have his B-sample analysed.
The B-sample was tested at the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) accredited laboratory at the University of the Free State which confirmed the A-sample results of the presence of the banned substances: methandienone, methyltestosterone and LGD-4033.
These performance-enhancing substances are on the 2019 List of Prohibited Substances and Methods in Sport and are banned in- and out-of-competition.
Mr Dyantyi has now been formally charged with a doping offence for multiple anabolic steroids and metabolites.
The charge has been communicated to SA Rugby, World Rugby and WADA.
The athlete has the option of admitting to the charge and accepting an appropriate sanction based on the World Doping Code’s framework. A reasoned decision will be issued explaining the sanction.
He may also submit a plea for consideration of a reduced sanction by providing mitigating circumstances.
Mr Dyantyi has the right to contest the charge before an independent tribunal panel. If he disputes the charge and pleads not guilty, a hearing will be set down within the next four weeks, and he will be required to provide evidence that can prove his innocence. The independent tribunal panel will then adjudicate over the proceeding and hand down a decision.
SAIDS is only able to further comment after a final decision has been made by the Tribunal Panel.
