Cronje called up to the Boks

Golden Lions scrumhalf Ross Cronje has been called up to Springboks tour squad as replacement for Rudy Paige.

The Springboks are facing a scrumhalf crisis with both Fourie du Preez and Ruan Pienaar out injured.

This has lead to Cobus Reinach and Francois Hougaard being used with Jano Vermaak the back up scrumhalf.

A request was made for Toulouse scrumhalf Vermaak to rejoin the squad but it was rejected as he is playing for his club this weekend.

Paige injured his medial knee ligaments in training earlier this week and will be out for approximately four weeks.

"Ross impressed during a very successful Currie Cup campaign for the Golden Lions and also showed good form earlier in the year in Super Rugby," said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

"We considered not calling up a third scrumhalf but that would've been very risky."

Cronje will link up with the Springboks in Cardiff on Friday.
